Do professional athletes make too much money, or do they deserve every penny? Why?
Ok, this is a bit of a bone of contention for me this debate. Its been raging with me and others for quite some time now and its interesting its been brought up as a QotD.
See, I am not saying athletes, be they footballers, basketball players, whatever, earn too much. I think that some of the amounts of money being thrown around is ridiculous, but two things come from that. One, I don't begrudge the athlete any penny of it and two, its not their fault.
The way I see it (and I have been saying this for YEARS now, even maybe before the whole "too much money" debate has come to a head) is that athletes, sports people, however you want to call them, are entertainers. I watch Match of the Day cos I LOVE football and I LOVE going to the games and for one reason. To be entertained. Ergo, they are entertainers, in the entertainment business.
Now, if you look at someone like George Michael, Michael Jackson, Prince, Harrison Ford.....the HUGE megastars of the world. They don't have to do a lot for their money do they? Big artists will bring out an album every 4 years or so, promote it to the hilt, say its the best thing they have ever done, we are exposed to it on a daily basis and then they bugger off back into obscurity until they decide they feel like a bit of attention again. And they get paid VAST amounts of money, yet they are entertaining me no more than the 22 guys who run around on the pitch every week for 9 months of the year, EVERY year. Tell me the difference and why its seen that sports people are paid too much? They work just as hard, if not harder than the lardy, has been artist living off past glories whose careers go on for centuries, yet the top sportsman has a top competetive life of 10 year or so.
So, go on. Justify why, given the current climate of affluence and greed in todays society, why sportsmen and women get paid too much? Cos I can't really see an argument...........I might not like the figures that are thrown around, but not going to begudge them a penny of it when FatStar won't get out of bed for less than £10,000.........
